MICHAEL CHANEY
LGBT Leader

Dr. Michael P. Chaney was the ALGBTIC National President (2010-2011)

Michael P. Chaney, PhD, LPC, NCC, is Assistant Professor of Education and Coordinator of Addictions Specialization at Oakland University.

Michael Chaney is a well-respected scholar who is committed to service locally and nationally. He was elected by his peers and members of the American Counseling Association (ACA) as board secretary of the Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues in Counseling (ALGBTIC) and currently serves as ALGBTIC President.

He also is a regional trainer for the American Psychological Association’s HIV Office for Psychology Education program, which supports mental health professionals in providing service to people living with HIV/AIDS.

Chaney was a principle organizer of Giving Back to the Community, a project sponsored by the American Counseling Association and the National Institute for Multicultural Competence. The project organized counselors at Focus: HOPE in Detroit during the 2007 ACA conference there. The purpose of the event was to promote social justice by generating ways to help minimize racial and class divides in the Detroit area.

Chaney’s commitment to social justice is evidenced at the university level by his membership on the advisory board of the Gender and Sexuality Center, and membership on the advisory board of SAFE (Students, Administrators and Faculty for Equality). He has served on the School of Education and Human Services Scholarship and Endowment Committee, which strives to ensure equal access to scholarship opportunities.
